Why is it that teenagers (especially boys) think they are absolutely, positively invincible? Monday, June 23rd, Tanner was at a friend's house riding a long board and did some "awesome ninja roll" supposedly landing on his feet. Well...he came home with a wrist ten sizes too big. James took him to the ER and he had broken his distal radius right along the growth plate. They put the bone back in place and wrapped it up. Ouch! The worst part is that less than a week before the "incident", James told Tanner (who found it amusing to do tricks on a skateboard) to QUIT because he has seen so many accidents from skateboards and trampolines. We discussed how if he got hurt, he may lose his spot on the football team, may lose his summer job (at the bean bag factory) etc. Of course, Tanner thought he would never get hurt. And when he did get hurt and we basically said, "Told you so," his reply was that a skateboard and long board are NOT the same thing. Ugh!

He had an appointment with the orthopedist and we found out the bone had slipped and he needed surgery with a plate and screws in his wrist. So Tuesday, July 1st, he had surgery where they basically re-broke the bone and then fixed it internally. He will have to go back in a year to get the plate and screws removed.

He just had his follow-up visit with the orthopedist and luckily only has to wear this brace for 4 more weeks. Of course in the meantime, he hasn't been able to play contact sports at all and DID lose his summer job. Hmmm, so mom and dad ARE always right?
